MARTINSVILLE, Va. (October 12, 2001)– The No. 01 and No. 40 teams of Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates secured 26th place and 42nd place starting positions during Friday’s qualifying for the Old Dominion 500 at Martinsville Speedway.
Sterling Marlin, driver of the No. 40 Coors Light Dodge Intrepid R/T, qualified 26th with a time of 20.490 seconds (92.416 mph) around the .526-mile oval. In the Spring 2001 event at Martinsville, Marlin qualified 31st and moved up the field to take the checkered flag in fifth place.
“ We ran some race runs this morning, and we’re pretty happy with the car in the race runs,” Marlin said. “ We’ll start in the back like we normally do at Martinsville, but we’ll be OK when they start the race. We should have won five or six short track races already, but we haven’t. We should have won two or three here. We’ve had some good runs at Bristol and Richmond.”
Jason Leffler, rookie driver of the No. 01 Cingular Wireless Dodge Intrepid R/T, will start 42nd for the Old Dominion 500. Leffler turned in a qualifying lap with a time of 20.742 seconds (91.293 mph). This is Leffler’s first Winston Cup start at Martinsville; the Cingular Wireless Dodge failed to make the April event.
The Old Dominion 500 will be broadcast on NBC this Sunday, Oct. 14 at 12:00 p.m., c.s.t.
