KEVIN HARVICK, NO. 29 SHELL-PENNZOIL CHEVROLET, met with members of the media at Chicagoland Speedway and discussed racing Chicagoland, Indianapolis Motor Speedway and other topics.
TALK ABOUT YOUR CAR IN THE TWO PRACTICES TODAY: "Our car is ok in race trim. It is slow in qualifying trim. It just doesn't have speed in qualifying trim. I think we are ok in race trim. Just go from there and see what happens."
TALK ABOUT WHAT YOU HAVE FIGURED OUT ABOUT THIS TRACK HAVING WON TWICE HERE: "The bumps are all in the same spots but the bumps have just gotten a little bit worse. The grove moves all around the race track. Whereas before, two groves was really about all that you had. The grove is just from top to bottom now. It is a fun race track to race on just for that reason."
CAN YOU LEARN ANYTHING HERE THAT WILL HELP IN KANSAS WHICH IS A CHASE RACE? "I don't think so. This track is so round. Kansas has a lot more squared-off entry to the corners. For the most part, the mile-and-a-halves have been our strong point this year. Like I said, our 10-lap speed is good. It is just the initial speed taking off."
WHAT IS THE FIRST THING THAT COMES TO YOUR MIND WHEN YOU HEAR INDY? "I think just a lot of tradition. Indy is one of those places where everybody wants to win. It is kind of the second place where you check off on the year where you want to try and win the race, next to Daytona. We've been fortunate to win there and know what that feels like. Growing up a fan of Indy Cars and really wanting to race open wheel cars, to be able to win there and just to compete there is pretty cool."
WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BE FAST THERE AND STAY UP FRONT? "Track position is pretty key there. You need to have a fast car. Usually Indy is a place where everybody brings out all of their new stuff to try to take that next step on performance. Hopefully we do that. I know we have a plan to do that and I think we will. Your car has to turn but you have to be able to lay the throttle down and still maintain grip up off the corner."
WHY IS IT A PLACE THAT YOU BRING OUT YOUR NEW STUFF AND TRY THERE? "Because it is Indy."
ANY THOUGHTS ABOUT NASCAR MAYBE CHANGING THE CHASE NEXT YEAR? "I'm not a big fan of change so they know where I stand on it."
ARE YOU OFF NEXT WEEK OR ARE YOU RACING SOMEWHERE? "We are going to race the (Nationwide) car and the Truck next weekend (at Gateway). We'll go up there Friday morning and race Friday and Saturday. Next Sunday is like a weekend off so we'll just take the day off on Sunday."
SO YOU AREN'T A GUY THAT NEEDS TO RECHARGE THE MENTAL BATTERIES? "I've been on vacation all week, I turned off for four or five days and that's usually enough for me."
HOW IS ATTENDANCE AT THE STAND ALONE RACES LIKE TRUCK AND NATIONWIDE AT GATEWAY NEXT WEEK? "Usually Gateway is pretty well attended. Iowa is usually well attended but a lot of these places aren't well attended. There are places where it could be a good thing and there are places where it's a bad thing."
IS THERE ONE GUY IN NATIONWIDE THAT YOU THINK IS THE TOP TALENT IN THE SERIES? "I really think the (Justin) Allgaier kid is really the only one that's really showing that he and win races. That is first one that comes to my mind."
WHAT IS YOU LIKE ABOUT HIS (ALLGAIER) HIS STYLE? "I just like that he is competitive. From a team owner standpoint, you just want somebody that can go fast enough to be competitive and just have a chance to win."
WHAT MAKES THE COMBINATION OF JIMMIE (JOHNSON) AND CHAD (KNAUS) SO EFFECTIVE AND HOW CAN YOU GET IN THEIR HEAD'S AND DE-THRONE THEM? "I think the only way to dethrone them is to beat them. We've done that a lot this year. But it really doesn't matter who beats who until we get to Loudon and from Loudon to Homestead is really all that matters. We just have to be prepared and do the things that it takes to make our cars better than they are right now and not make any mistakes. That is really what it boils down to until somebody beats them. They've won it the last four years and they should be the favorites to win it right now until somebody can knock them off."
IS THERE A PART OF YOU THAT WISHES THE CHASE WAS STARTING RIGHT NOW? "I definitely think we have a few things we need to work on. We've got some new stuff in the pipeline that hopefully is better like we think it is and hopefully we can start trying that stuff over the next couple of weeks. Right now there is no risk for us as far as the next several weeks go. Obviously you don't want to have complete disasters, but you can take a lot more chances on R & D parts and pieces and cars and things like than you could in the first part of the season."
