Steve Parks and Winston Cup
As we reported earlier Steve Parks will run selected races this year. There will be four that are planned. Races they expect to run include Pocono(July), New Hampshire (unsure) , Watkins Glen, Phoenix and Atlanta. Earnhardt may put Park in a Winston Cup car full time next year, but is not quite sure right now. It has been mentioned in several places that Jay Sauter could also be in contention to run a few races in this car.
Ernie Irvan and the Retro Rocket
Ernie Irvan will be sporting a new paint job this weekend that has been coined the retro rocket. The Texaco Havolin Ford is showing new colors for the 600 and going back for this race to an old design that Davey Allison used to run. The car is white black and gold. It was one of my favorites when Allison was still alive.
Rick Hendrick Trial Update
A federal judge rejected claims that car dealer and NASCAR team owner Rick Hendrick was singled out by prosecutors in the American Honda bribery scandal. US District Judge Lacy Thornburg ruled there is no evidence federal authorities unfairly targeted Hendrick, who claims he is the victim of "selective and vindictive prosecution." Hendrick was indicted in December 1996 on 15 charges of conspiracy, money-laundering and fraud. His brother, John, was indicted on one count of conspiracy. They have pleaded innocent and face an August trial. (Courtesy of Jayski)
Silly Season and rumors
Here is a scenario that has been rumored recently. Marlin into Yates' Fords, Irvan into Bechtel's Chevrolets, and Bobby Hamilton into Larry McClure's Chevrolets, replacing Marlin. Where that would leave Richard Petty and crew chief Robbie Loomis is unclear. But Yates insists he still hasn't decided what he'll do for 1998, denying reports of ''a done deal'' with Marlin. ''I've answered it so many ways, that I wish it'd just stop,'' Yates said of the Irvan issue. ''I'd like to say it doesn't bother me . . . but it is bothering me.'' ''I've honestly enjoyed racing these first 10 races about as much as I have in a while,'' Yates said. ''We've had a lot of fun, we just haven't had quite the luck we've needed. We went six races without a front bumper on the car. But we've had some great race cars. ''I told Texaco, 'Give us the first 10 races, till Charlotte, and we won't think about it till then.' Now we're getting to that hour. And yet nothing (in terms of alternatives) is standing out as to what we ought to do. ''If we started just going through the motions with Ernie, then maybe I just better make this clear, plain and simple -- either somebody else is in and he's out, or he's in and that's it.''
