Accident Relegates Marlin to 33rd-Place Finish

CONCORD, N.C. (May 27, 2007)-- A 13-car accident in Sunday's Coca-Cola 600 relegated Sterling Marlin to a 33rd-place finish at Lowe's Motor Speedway.

As the 43-car field rounded the 1.5-mile oval on Lap 52 of 400, the tire tread on the No. 48 (Jimmie Johnson) car flew across the track. As the cars around him slowed to avoid the debris, a chain reaction occurred, causing a melee down the frontstretch.

"We just didn't have anywhere to go," said Marlin, who started 30th in the Nextel Cup event. "We were on the outside and our Pep Boys Chevy got shoved into the wall. There was nothing anyone could do."

Marlin drove his crippled machine to the garage, where the No. 14 Ginn Racing crew spent 93 laps making repairs. He returned to the track on Lap 145.

"It really is a shame," said crew chief Slugger Labbe. "It seems like every time we have a fast car we get caught up in something like this. The Pep Boys Chevy was running top-five speeds and I think we could've gotten a top-10 finish."

"This is a long race, so we were taking our time and making our way to the front," added Marlin. "We just needed to stay out of trouble and we were going to be a contender. It's frustrating, but it's part of racing. We'll put it behind us and move on to next week."

The series heads to Dover International Speedway for next Sunday's (June 3) Nextel Cup event. The race will be broadcast live on FOX, beginning at 1 p.m. ET.
