Driver Reaches 725th Start at Coca-Cola 600
RANDLEMAN, N.C.- Kyle Petty, driver of the #45 Georgia-Pacific/Brawny Dodge, will make his 725th career start Sunday night, May 29 during the running of the Coca-Cola 600 at the 1.5-mile Lowe's Motor Speedway. Petty found about out the milestone Thursday.
"I didn't even know I passed 700," commented Petty. "It's pretty cool. I guess it means that I started a lot earlier and have been around a long time. I never really thought about it, but when someone tells you, yeah, it's pretty cool.
Petty is currently seventh on the NASCAR all-time start list, and second among active drivers. Petty's father, Richard, has the most Nextel Cup career starts with 1,185 career starts.
"I need someone to tell me when I hit 800," said Petty. "I think that's an impressive number, but 725 career starts is pretty special. You look around and there aren't too many guys that can say that."
Petty first started racing in 1979 when he started five races for Petty Enterprises. His first career Nextel Cup start came at the Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway.
