Smith, Furniture Row Racing Taking Momentum to Charlotte

DENVER, Colo. (Oct. 13, 2010) -- Though Regan Smith is coming off his best finish of the season, the Furniture Row Racing driver is not allowing the performance to affect or consume his mental preparation for Saturday night's Bank of America 500 Sprint Cup race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

When he was asked recently about his 12th-place result in Sunday's race in Fontana, Calif., a philosophical Smith said, "It's the old saying -- don't get too low when things are going bad or too high when things are going well, keep the focus on the next race. But I can tell you this -- the Furniture Row Racing team is a work in progress. We're basically in the first year of a multiyear plan. And right now I can honestly say that we're on track or even slightly ahead of where we thought we would be at this stage. That is good news."

Smith has indeed picked up the pace the second half of the season even though some of his strong performances were overshadowed by bad racing luck and and mechanical malfunctions.

"We are getting better at minimizing mistakes and overcoming adversity," said No. 78 crew chief Pete Rondeau. "It's called experience and we're seeing daylight. Last week was a good example. Regan got called for speeding twice, but we all kept our heads on straight and came back to lead the race with 12 laps remaining. That was pretty cool."

Smith couldn't ask for a better venue to follow his 12th-place California result than Charlotte Motor Speedway.

"Charlotte is a marquee track and I really enjoy racing there," stated Smith. "What's even better is the fact that the mile-and-half tracks like Charlotte are where we seem to do well. It's just a matter of time before we get the first top-10 monkey-off-our-back finish."

In only three previous Cup starts at Charlotte, Smith has finishes of 19th and 31st in 2008 and 19th at this year's Memorial Day weekend race. Charlotte was also the site where Smith scored his first top-10 finish in the Nationwide Series at the May 2006 race.

"I have a comfort level at Charlotte and hopefully we can bring home some more good news for our Furniture Row Racing team."
