AMBROSE QUALIFIES 13TH IN CHARLOTTE
Marcos Ambrose has qualified in an encouraging 13th place for the NASCAR Banking 500 at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Charlotte, North Carolina today.
Ambrose set his #47 Clorox-backed entry of JTG Daugherty Racing up for a good performance in this weekend's night race at the 1.5-mile oval with his 11th top 15 qualifying performance this season.
The Australian, who continues to sit in 17th in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series standings is looking to continue his strong form in this final part of his first season in the top level of NASCAR, having been on course for another top 15 finish last weekend at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California, only to become the innocent victim of a late-race crash on the front stretch in the late stages of the 500-mile race.
Ambrose continued on to the finish in his damaged car to collect 23rd place, one lap behind race winner Jimmie Johnson.
Sprint Cup points leader Jimmie Johnson won pole for the NASCAR Banking 500 today ahead of Mark Martin and Kasey Kahne.
WHAT MARCOS HAD TO SAY --
"I'm just really pleased that I brought it back in one piece," said Ambrose.
"This is a brand new car. I'm really pleased with our development on one-and-a-half-mile programs.
"I'm excited about it. I beat Carl Edwards, so that's something, right?
"It a cold track and there's a lot of grip at this place. And Goodyear has come back with a really good tyre.
"It's a combination of the team's working their stuff in the COT, improved tyres, cool track -- we're laying them down.
"Anything that is sub-29 (second lap time) is getting it done. And this place tonight feels so fast, it's insane.
"You got tyres that are working great, really cool track and really good horsepower with the cool conditions.
"It's just insane. I'm just pleased I brought it back. It took my breath away and it's not often I'll say that."
