Buckshot Jones To Compete In The UAW-GM 500

SPARTANBURG, SC- Buckshot Jones looks to make his second NASCAR Winston Cup start at Lowe's Motor Speedway in the UAW-GM 500 this weekend. Jones will drive the Federated Auto Parts Ford Taurus owned by Winston Cup legend, Ernie Irvan. "Driving for Ernie Irvan and Federated Auto Parts is a great opportunity," Jones said. "They have great equipment and a knowledgeable owner in Ernie." In preparation for his 15th career Winston Cup race, Jones had the chance to get to know Irvan on a personal basis. Jones and Irvan discovered that they had more in common than their racing roots and established a great rapport. "Last week, I went up to the shop to meet Ernie and the team and talk about set up for the race," said Jones. "I've known Ernie for a while, but after I spent time really getting to know him, I realized that we have a lot more in common than just racing. One thing that I learned about him is that his family shows horses like I did when I was younger." In his first Winston Cup effort at Lowe's Motor Speedway, Jones qualified 18th and overcame an early accident to capture a respectable 29th-place finish. Although Jones has limited experience in a Winston Cup car at Lowe's Motor Speedway, he has learned a lot about the track and his knowledge can help him this weekend. "Before I started racing in the Winston Cup Series, I would watch the races because they run a different groove than the Busch Series," Jones commented. "I learned which groove to drive and it helped me qualify well in the Coca-Cola 600 last spring." By observing Winston Cup races and competing in this season's longest race at Lowe's Motor Speedway, there is no doubt that Jones is familiar with the 1.5-mile oval. However, his Busch Series results suggest that he is also a contender for a strong finish. In only five Busch Series starts, Jones has one top-five and three top 10s; including an impressive run from the 30th starting spot to finish fifth in his most recent effort, the 1998 All Pro Bumper to Bumper 300. "Hopefully, my experience in Charlotte will help put me ahead of the game this time around," said Jones. "I'm definitely looking for a strong weekend in the Federated Auto Parts Ford Taurus." The association of Buckshot Jones and Ernie Irvan delivers the right combination of youth and experience as the Federated Auto Parts team prepare to take to the track at Lowe's Motor Speedway.
