EDWARDS TO MAKE 200TH SPRINT CUP START AT PHOENIX
(CONCORD, N.C.) -- Carl Edwards is set to make his 200th NASCAR Sprint Cup Series start at Phoenix International Raceway on Saturday, April 10 in the Subway Fresh Fit 600. His first start came at Michigan International Speedway on August 22, 2004 where he started 23rd and finished 10th.
"It is pretty unbelievable that it's my 200th start," Edwards said. "I'm just grateful to have the opportunity to race these cars. Like most racers I just dreamed about being able to compete at the level I'm racing at and win.
"There's no better place for me to have a milestone start like this than at Phoenix. That is where I ran my first-ever pavement race in 2001. That was a big day for me, so to think almost 10 years have passed since I pulled my little trailer in with all my hopes and dreams, and set up my tent down in turn one to work on my USAC Silver Crown car. Almost all that stuff has come true, although we still need to win a Cup championship. But 200 starts and a bunch of wins is a good start. That will be fun to strap in the car on Saturday and think about all that."
In 199 starts Edwards has earned 16 wins, 61 top-five, 102 top-10 finishes and four poles. He has completed 57,461 laps and led 2,599 of them. His best finish in the point standings came in 2008 when he finished second, only 69 points from the championship. He has made the Chase four out the five years he has competed full time in the series.
Of drivers who have started 200 races from 1972-present, only six have more wins that Edwards on their 200th start: Jeff Gordon (45), Jimmie Johnson (27), Darrell Waltrip (25), Tony Stewart (19), Rusty Wallace (18) and Bill Elliott (17).
