California Speedway and the Sharp AQUOS 500 are the Next Stop for NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series
SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY, CA -- Labor Day weekend's Sharp AQUOS 500 at California Speedway is the next visit on the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup circuit. The Sharp AQUOS 500 will mark the 15th NASCAR NEXTEL Cup race to take place at California Speedway and the second such race of 2007. The race will be the 25th of 36 NEXTEL Cup races during the 2007 season. As the second to last stop in the Race to the Chase, the Sharp Aquos 500 will be critical to wrapping up the last few spots in the Chase for the Cup.
Carl Edwards earned his first win of the season last Saturday night at Bristol Motor Speedway and subsequently locked down a spot in the Chase for the Cup for the first time since 2005. With his victory, Edwards joins Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, Denny Hamlin and Matt Kenseth as drivers who have already earned a spot in the field of 12. Only 158 points separate Kurt Busch (2,879) - currently holding the 12th and final spot - and Dale Earnhardt Jr. (2,721) in the Race to the Chase. Busch has three top three finishes at California Speedway including a win in 2003. While Earnhardt Jr. has never won in Southern California, he finished second in this race last year.
In addition to thrilling NASCAR action, California Speedway will be the site of a weekend full of entertainment with visits by a host of special guests. Twenty-five-time Grammy Award winner Stevie Wonder will be serving as the race's Grand Marshal, while Dylan and Cole Sprouse, the stars of the hit Saturday morning original series "The Suite Life of Zack and Cody," will be Honorary Starters. Platinum recording artist 30 Seconds to Mars will be performing during the Miller Lite Rock 'n Racing show in the Opportunity, California FanZone. Other musical performances throughout the weekend include Los Angeles-area rock bands Melee and Little Caesar, country singer/songwriter Peter Brandon and Latin alternative band Volumen Cero.
