Ryan Newman in the No. 12 Alltel Ford was the highest qualifying Raybestos® Rookie at Michigan. He will start sixth in Sunday'S Sirius Satellite Radio 400. This is the eighth time this season he has taken top qualifying rookie honors. Qualifying was interrupted by a two hour rain delay.
"I think it's going to keep picking up, with the clouds coming in. We're going to be lucky if it doesn't rain here. Overall, it was a good run for the ALLTEL Ford. We picked up quite a bit from our practice, which I think everybody will. Hopefully, it will get us a good starting spot for Sunday."
MATT BORLAND, CREW CHIEF NO.12 ALLTEL FORD:
RYAN SAID YOU PICKED UP SPEED FROM PRACTICE TO QUALIFYING. DID YOU TAKE A BIG GAMBLE OR DID YOU MAKE AN EDUCATED GUESS?
"More of an educated guess. We kind of went off some of his comments from practice and we knew we were pretty good in practice but there were a couple of guys that looked like they might be quite good. We took a gamble on a couple small things and it seemed to work pretty good."
IF QUALIFYING IS RAINED OUT AND YOU DO HAVE TO START ON POINTS, HOW BIG OF A DISAPPOINTMENT WILL IT BE?
"It's disappointing, but I think it will shake itself out here after the first few pitstops. I don't think it will be a huge disadvantage on way or the other."
JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 LOWE'S CHEVROLET, QUALIFIED 14TH.
"That was a good lap. We expected to pick up a little bit more, like everyone else had been doing. Sometimes you pick up seven tenths, sometimes you don't. This time we got a few. It should be a decent starting spot for the Lowe's Monte Carlo. I'm real excited with this car. We've got the car that we won California with and we're really looking forward to the race on Sunday. We've been really loose in practice and we've been trying to tighten the car back up. We got it tightened up where I could drive it in qualifying trim. It should be a decent starting spot."
DID YOU RUN A DIFFERENT CHASSIS SETUP TODAY VERSUS WHAT YOU RAN AT CALIFORNIA?
"No, we've got virtually the same setups from California here. The track is a lot different so the same setup doesn't exactly lay over. It's the same car and a very similar setup."
