A story that we have been following closely has come to a sad end. Miss Food City 1997 Amanda Whited has lost her life as a result of an accident.

"A Richlands beauty queen has lost her fight for life from injuries received in an automobile accident. Amanda Ashley Whited, 18, was critically injured in the mishap on Route 609 on Kent's Ridge. After a lengthy stay at Bristol Regional Medical Center, Whited was transferred to the University of Virginia to seek further medical attention, a BRMC spokesperson said. Whited was transported to UVa Thursday around 8:30 p.m. She died about 1:30 p.m. Sunday. A hospital spokesperson said numerous injuries attributed to her death. She was born in Richlands, VA and was the daughter of David A. and Alita Ratliff Whited of Belfast. She was a lifelong resident of the Belfast area and a 1996 graduate of Richlands High School. She was a student at Southwest Virginia Community College and was a part-time employee of Triple A Tuxedo at the Claypool Hill Mall. She was recently crowned Miss Food City 500 for the Bristol Food City 500 race. Memorial contributions may be made to the Clinch Critterville Playground, c/o Town of Richlands, 217 Railroad Ave., Richlands, VA 24641."
