Yeley Runs Strong, but Fades Late to Finish 25th at Bristol

J.J. Yeley started 25th and finished 25th in Sunday's Food City 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway. The driver of the No. 96 DLP HDTV Toyota Camry for Hall of Fame Racing ran strong and was between 15th and 20th for much of the race and in good position for a top-20 finish as the final 100 laps approached.

On lap 382 as the race restarted on the eighth caution of the day, Yeley was 18th, one lap behind the leader, but in position to get the "lucky dog" should the caution have come out. Unfortunately, the handling on Yeley's No. 96 machine went away, and he fell from 18th to 25th in the last 124 laps of the event -- 114 of which were conducted under green.

"We were in contention for the lucky dog," Yeley said. "It was either the changes we made or the set of tires we had, but it was really, really bad. We lost two laps on the race track and we weren't that bad all day long. It was the wrong part of the day to have a bad run, but in the big picture, we're better than we were the last couple of weeks."

Yeley's 25th-place result moved him up four spots to 31st in the championship point standings. After five races, Yeley has 386 points, 16 points behind 30th-place Michael Waltrip and 12 points ahead of 32nd-place Jeremy Mayfield.

"We distanced ourselves from 35th a little bit today," said Yeley, referencing Hall of Fame Racing's 34-point buffer over the 36th-place No. 26 team of Roush Fenway Racing. "We'd like to have finished better and gotten more points, but we'll take this and continue to improve at Martinsville in two weeks. We had a decent day today and we'll build on that in a couple of weeks."
