DALE JARRETT --88-- UPS Taurus (Qualified 19th)
"Things are so close here it's hard to predict, but that's faster than I ran. I picked up from practice and that's normally not what I do here, so I'm glad of that. If you look at it, I would think that might make the top 15 or maybe even the top 10. That should be a decent starting spot."
DO YOU FEEL THINGS ARE POINTED IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION? "I think so. Things are going well right now and we've got a lot of good race cars. That makes all the difference in the world."
MATT KENSETH --17-- DEWALT Power Tools Taurus (Qualified 10th)
"It was pretty good compared to what we've been running. We've got some guys running quicker than us now, but it felt real good. I got a real good first lap and the second lap I kind of went for it and messed it up a little bit, but it was good for us."
RICKY RUDD --28-- Havoline Taurus (Qualified 15th)
"That's quicker than we practiced. I think we were about 18th-fastest in practice. I think that will put us around 12th to 15th, but we were a little too tight in the center of the corner. You look at how close this is, you're talking about thousandths-of-a-second. That was something like a .56 and there are probably going to be 15 cars in the same category. It's gonna be real close, but we're happy with that."
HOW DOES IT FEEL TO COME TO THE TRACK AND NOT HAVE PEOPLE ASKING YOU ABOUT NEXT YEAR? "It's awful nice to talk about racing, instead of what's gonna happen next year. It's back to racing now."
BRETT BODINE --11-- Hooters Taurus (Qualified 28th)
"That was better than we practiced. I think we made a wrong gear selection. We took gear out trying to turn a little less RPM in qualifying. We made a chassis adjustment and really got the car hooked up. I could have used the gear. That probably cost us half-a-tenth, but that was a good effort for us."
RYAN NEWMAN --12-- ALLTEL Taurus (Qualified 14th)
"The second lap would have been pretty good, but I just tried a little hard off of four there and tried to stay in the gas. That got me pretty sideways, but it was still our fastest lap, which tells you how fast it would have been if we could have kept it straight. We just tried real hard."
MARK MARTIN --6-- Viagra Taurus (Qualified 21st)
"We got lucky with the track cooling and everything else because that's much better than we deserved."
RICKY CRAVEN --32-- Tide Taurus (Qualified 7th)
THIS CONTINUES A STRONG QUALIFYING SEASON. "Yeah and I think it's been one of our strengths. Qualifying has helped us a lot this year. We need to parlay that into some good finishes. We've hit a bit of a head wind here in the last handful of races, but there's no need for panic. We just need to get going. You look at last week at Michigan, we were so much better than 17th, but it was what it was and you just can't hand onto that, you've got to look to the next race and these guys did that. They've got this Tide Ford ready to run at Bristol and I'm pretty proud of what I've got to drive."
WHAT WAS THE KEY TO YOUR LAP? "The key for me, and it's normally this way, is the entry. They got my entry so I could be aggressive and I could get back in the gas. We just work on that a lot. They do a good job accommodating me."
KURT BUSCH --97-- Rubbermaid Taurus (Qualified 8th)
"The car didn't turn all that well. I believed we would run a .60 with that, but a .52 is pretty extraordinary. For me, I've never qualified in the top 25 here and that's just a testament to Jimmy Fennig's experience and everybody keeping focus and moving in the right direction. In practice, I went the wrong way and we decided to go the other way and it paid off. We should be in the top 10 with that, hopefully, and it's a better start than what we had here in the spring."
ARE YOU GUYS STILL RIDING THAT CONFIDENCE FROM THE SPRING RACE? "I hope so. I hope we can continue to do well here. This is always a track that intimidates you when you see it for the first few times. This is my fourth time here and things are starting to feel more comfortable and, hopefully, we can continue to have success here with the Sharpie 500 being the fall race every year."
JEFF BURTON --99-- Citgo Taurus (Qualified 36th)
"We haven't had a good lap since we've been here. We've been slow. We unloaded slow. We worked, but never got any better. We just haven't been good all day. We were 36th in practice and we're gonna be 36th in qualifying. We didn't make any gains at all, so it's been a frustrating day. There's been nothing good about today."
RUSTY WALLACE --2-- Miller Lite Taurus (Qualified 4th)
"I was just a little bit too loose. Man, I tell you, right before I went out that sun came out and everything got warmer. I couldn't believe it, but I was a little too loose. I needed just a little more tightness to really get the job done."
YOU'LL START IN THE TOP FIVE. "That's important. We're fourth right now and I thought we could be better than that. I really wanted this pole bad."
ELLIOTT SADLER --21-- Motorcraft Taurus (Qualified 37th)
NOTE: The team changed motors before qualifying. "It's been a pretty bad day. Still didn't fix the problem in the car, still only running on seven cylinders. I really don't know what the problem is. The car's been driving good, but we've had some kind of electrical problem or something in the motor."
WHAT HAPPENED ON THE LAP. "I just got on the apron a little bit. I was so disgusted that this car was still messed up, I tried to make up for it in the middle of the corner. Stomped on the gas, got on the apron, and just turned around and wrecked it. It was just 100 percent my fault. It's just been one of those days."
