Brewer named crew chief for Hedrick, Grissom

STATESVILLE, N.C. (Aug. 4, 1998) Tim Brewer, who has won two NASCAR Winston Cup Series championships as a crew chief, has been named to that role for the No. 41 Kodiak Larry Hedrick Motorsports team. He has already assumed his duties at the team shop in Statesville and is working with the crew as they prepare for this weekend's Bud at the Glen at Watkins Glen International. "We are delighted to have Tim on board with us," team owner Larry Hedrick said. "He brings the winning experience to us with his many years in the business. We are sure to reap benefits from his wealth of knowledge about the sport and his racing background. We expect to be taken to a new level of performance with Tim's leadership." Much of Brewer's wide range of racing experience came in 13 years under the legendary Junior Johnson. Brewer's first year with the Johnson organization was 1978, when Cale Yarborough captured the last of his three championships. Brewer has worked with and been crew chief for some of the biggest names in the sport, including Yarborough, Darrell Waltrip, Tim Richmond, Neil Bonnett, Terry Labonte, Geoff Bodine and Bill Elliott. "I'm really glad and honored to have this opportunity with Larry Hedrick Motorsports," the 43-year old Brewer said. "I'm really looking forward to working with Larry and Sue (Hedrick, Larry's wife and co-owner). And it's been a while since I worked with Mike Hill (team manager). Mike and I worked together over at Junior's. "When I walked through the shop here for the first time I saw a lot of familiar faces, and I'm looking forward to working with them all, and getting to know some of others. Larry has formed a really good group of guys here, and I hope I can contribute to their efforts for success on the circuit. "I'm also eager to be working with Steve Grissom. Steve is a good race car driver. He has proved that. You don't win the NASCAR Busch Grand National Series championship not being a good, experienced driver. He's been through the bullrings and so many of the situations that come up in racing. Hopefully, we'll make a good team together and work to win some poles and some races." Brewer's 29 years of experience include championships in 1978 with Yarborough and in 1981 with Waltrip. Brewer also has 53 wins to his credit and 54 Bud Poles. His background also includes experience as crew chief with Blue Max Racing (Tim Richmond), M.C.Anderson Racing, Bill Davis Racing (with Bobby Labonte), and Kranefuss-Haas Racing (with John Andretti). "There's a kind of chemistry process that has to come together to form a really competitive race team," said Brewer. "Some people can relate better than some can to others, but it's a maturing process. Top performances come from a mixing of talent between driver, crew chief and crew, and what they all put into the product together, not individually. "I'm here to help this team in any aspect I can. I feel like I've accumulated a lot of knowledge about racing over the years and what it takes to win, so I hope I'll be able to add some of that background to the efforts of everybody here. We hope that will mean steady improvement in performance, and the sooner, the better." Source: NASCAR Online
