France recovering in Japan

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Nov. 21, 1997) NASCAR President Bill France is resting comfortably in satisfactory condition at a Japanese hospital following an angioplasty procedure. The company expects Mr. France to make a complete recovery. Mr. France complained of shortness of breath upon arriving in Tokyo late Friday afternoon, local time, for Sunday's NASCAR Thunder Special - Suzuka stock car exhibition race. Doctors at a local hospital determined after a series of tests that Mr. France had experienced a mild coronary incident and recommended the procedure, which was performed under a local anesthetic. Mr. France, 64, has no prior history of cardiac ailments. "We have spoken directly with Bill and he is cheerful, alert and resting comfortably," said NASCAR Executive Vice President and Secretary Jim France, who is the brother of Bill France. "Because of the nature of Bill's visit to Japan, he has been accompanied by a number of business associates, including an American physician. We are also very appreciative for the responsiveness and care of the Japanese medical community."
