Ford Driver's Notes and Quotes
Friday, March 8, 1996.
Atlanta Motor Speedway. First-round qualifying Purolator 500.
TERRY LABONTE (No. 5 Kellogg's Corn Flakes Monte Carlo) "I think the car was quicker than that. The first lap was OK. I got through one and two really good on the second lap, and I tried to get through three and four just as good. I got in a little too hard and the car slid up on me and broke loose and I had to get off the be-coming off of turn four. I can't believe it was as fast as it was It's a shame, because the car was really good. I think it's going to be a tough race. We're a little concerned about this kind of track."
JEFF GORDON (No. Z4 DuPont Automotive Finishes Monte Carlo) "We're a little disappointed. We're very disappointed, actually. We had run faster than that in practice, and you always feel like you're going to get a little bit extra. Instead, we lost time. I've seen a couple of other guys doing that, but some other guys are picking up a bunch. We thought we were in the top five or top 10 hunt, but now we're way out of that. I didn't see any problem with the weather other than you've got to be careful in the first corner. My tires came in pretty good, but most guys are running faster on their second lap."
RICKY CRAVEN (No. 41 Kodiak Chevrolet Monte Carlo) "That lap was a lot better than we expected. We weren't that good. We wanted to get through the day and get the Kodiak Chevrolet ready to race. That's been our strength all season. Getting in the first round today was really a bonus, because the car was really a rascal today. We made the best of it." JOE NEMECHEK (No. 87 Burger King Chevrolet Monte Carlo) "We got in a good first lap, and I thought the second lap was going to be pretty good, too. I drove in way down in turn three and got back in the gas. All of a sudden it just busted loose. There wasn't a thing I could do about it. It was almost like I hit a patch of ice or something. It came around quick. We'll just get the backup car out and try to go fast with it."
KEN SCHRADER (No. 25 Budweiser Chevrolet Monte Carlo) "We were just slow, but we'll be good in the race. That was the fastest lap we've run all day, but it still wasn't fast enough." ROBERT PRESSLEY (No. 33 Skoal Bandit Chevrolet Monte Carlo) "We'd run faster in practice, and we were trying to go for the pole. I just overdrive the car. I knew I had messed up a little bit on the first lap, and I just tried too hard on the second lap. That's the best we've run here at Atlanta, so we'll take it and be happy with
DALE EARNHARDT (No. 3 GM Goodwrench Service Monte Carlo) "We weren't as good as we were in practice. I'm not sure why. We'd been a lot faster in practice. I guess our qualifying practice wasn't what it should have been, but the car ran real good. I thought we had a good lap going. It really felt good going through the corners, but I'm disappointed with it. We lost a couple of tenths somewhere. Maybe the car got cold and we lost it in the car. It's the same car we had here last time, so I'm ready for it." STERLING Marlin (No. 4 Kodak Film Chevrolet Monte Carlo) "We got in a rush and just didn't get the car straightened out. We found some stuff we thought might hurt us. We've really been struggling, but we'll get everything worked out and be ready to go on Sunday."
ROBERT PRESSLEY (No. 33 Skoal Bandit Chevrolet Monte Carlo) "We'd run faster in practice, and we were trying to go for the pole. I just overdrove the car. I knew I had messed up a little bit on the first lap, and I just tried too hard on the second lap. That's the best we.ve run here at Atlanta, so we will take it and be happy with it."
DARRELL WALTRIP (No. 17 Western Auto Parts America Monte Carlo) "We had a little problem, and we had to do a lot of things to the car. I just wasn't comfortable with it. We used up our qualifying tires trying to go fast. That hurt us a little bit. This was the same car we won the pole with here last time, but that was as fast as I could go today. I couldn't hold my breath for two laps. I just learned how to hold it for one lap.
