'Awesome Bill from Dawsonville' Celebrates 20th Anniversary of Winston Cup Championship at AMS Where He Clinched the Title
HAMPTON, Ga. (Oct. 13, 2008) -- Atlanta Motor Speedway will honor Bill Elliott's 1988 Melling Racing Team to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the team's 1988 NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship as part of the pre-race activities for the Oct. 26 Pep Boys Auto 500.
Many of Elliott's crew members from the 1988 Championship team will join the Dawsonville native on stage for a recognition ceremony.
"I think it will be pretty neat," said Elliott, who won six races at Atlanta Motor Speedway to tie for third in all-time AMS wins. "I mean, it's been a long time and I haven't seen a lot of the team in the last number of years."
Elliott's team, based in his hometown of Dawsonville, is the only team located outside of North Carolina to win both the driver and owner championships.
"You know, I always wondered how many other teams have won a championship outside the state of North Carolina," continued Elliott. "I don't know if anybody's answered that yet, but most of the time the championship has been won by a team that's based in North Carolina."
In all, 27 team members aided Elliott en route to the championship, which he locked up with an 11th-place showing in the 1988 Atlanta Journal 500. In that season, Elliott won six races to finish 24 points ahead of Rusty Wallace to claim the title.
"It's been a while [since winning the championship], but it seems like yesterday when I won it," added Elliott. "It's been a long time and, now, so much is different from that era. We did well and ran well all year, and it was good to finish it up in Atlanta, being this is my home territory."
Among his six wins at AMS, Elliott twice swept both the spring and fall races in Atlanta, in 1985 and 1992. Statistically at Atlanta, Elliott ranks fifth all time in lead-lap finishes (17), is third in starts (59) and is eighth in top-five finishes (14). In addition, Elliott's 59 starts in Atlanta are the most among active drivers.
Great seats are available for all Pep Boys Auto 500 race weekend events, October 24-26th, including in the Elliott Grandstand where fans can purchase a $39 adult ticket. Call the Atlanta Motor Speedway ticket office at 1-877-AMS-TIX or 770-946-4211 and reserve your seat today.
