DALE EARNHARDT, JR., NO. 88 AMP ENERGY/NATIONAL GUARD IMPALA SS, met with member of the media at Atlanta Motor Speedway and discussed.
YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT THE WEATHER ISSUES TODAY AND GETTING READY FOR THE RACE: "It is misting pretty hard right now. The track is too wet. It is terrible conditions to try and be out there doing any kind of work. We just need to be cognizant of the safety of the situation. We will do what we can, but I don't think this is going to work today. We'll see what tomorrow looks like, I reckon."
HOW DO YOU ASSESS THE 2008 SEASON AND HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT GOING IN TO THE 2009 SEASON? "I feel pretty good about how we ran this year and how we have been able to be fast pretty much every week. I will just try to go in, do it again, do it better next year. You can come up with all kind of little sayings, we are going to build on it, we are going to do this, that and the other. But, you go in to next year and try and be faster, be smarter. We have a little bit of knowledge about what worked this year and what didn't. Try us that to our advantage, try to use what worked as much as you can and make it better. Make what worked better. Keep on massaging on the car, tweaking on little things and setups and stuff and just making the car better to drive every time you get an opportunity. I feel pretty good about how we did this year. Real confident in our ability to go out next year and make a better showing."
WHAT DID YOU DO TO PASS THE TIME TODAY WHILE IT WAS RAINING? "I got some DVDs given to me of some of the races at Atlanta from the '70-'71 season and some of the stuff from the '68 and '69 races at Martinsville and a race from 1971 at Richmond, which I thought was pretty cool. I watched a little bit of that. Just sitting in the motorhome goofing off really, not really doing anything productive. To be honest."
DO YOU THINK TIRES WILL AFFECT THE RACE ON SUNDAY? "I have to get on the track and run a little bit to figure that out. See what the tire is like and see how the car drives. They said this tire on the right side is a little softer and should add more grip. I think that is a good thing. We definitely didn't have grip here last time so a softer, a grippier tire is going to help us a lot even if wears out and gets real, real slick late in the run. That's ok. You just want a little bit of grip to go racing there for at least 25-30 laps. A softer tire should do that. This track is wearing out pretty good. Getting' good and worn out, like an old Rockingham or Darlington a little bit. I would almost put it in that category. It needs a pretty soft tire for us to be able to get ahold of it."
WHO IS THE BEST ACTIVE DRIVER NEVER TO WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP? "I would say Mark Martin is definitely the best to not have won a championship. He has a sizable margin over second place in my opinion."
