"The car is pretty good. We made a few adjustments. We made a track bar adjustment and a little air in the right rear tire. We came real close to getting blocked in those pits again. We came in in front of Kurt Busch, and I had to come in and stop. The 10 car came in in front of me at an angle. That's what you've got to do here with the pits being that narrow. We're going to think about what we've got to do the rest of the day to get in the pits. Our pit stops are good, but it's hard to believe a track this big has pits that small.
"The less cars on pit road, the better, but the key is to get bigger pit stalls. When you get to Atlanta and look at these little pit stalls, you know you're in trouble. You've got to negotiate a little and talk to your neighbor to give you more room. Your crew chief, you're always wanting him to pick a pit around somebody that might go a lap down and hope you've got an opening either in front of you or behind you when you come in.
"Before Watkins Glen we were (10th) in the points and looking really good. Four races in a row were DNFs, brake problems, a blown engine, a crash at Darlington. This has never in my life happened before. We went from (10th to 17th). We're working our way back, but we've only got four races to get there.
"Roy McCauley is my engineer, and I've always had good engineers, but Roy and I really get along good, and my cars are handling better. We've got a lot of time and effort invested in Billy Wilburn (crew chief), but we're getting better and better together. There's been a lot of controversy on the internet about Billy, but he's a friend of mine and we've got two years of building together going on. He's a good kid, and we've got a good race team. We've just got to strike. First things first, you've got to make your cars handle and get your pit stops good. I believe we've got that now. Now we just need a little luck."
SO WILBURN WILL BE BACK AS CREW CHIEF NEXT YEAR?
"Yeah, that's the plan."
WHAT DO YOU DO DURING RAIN DELAY?
"You want to get after it and have a great day, and then it rains. It's kinda aggravating, but the deal is we know we'll get it in today. We'll talk about what the car is doing and try to come up with some ideas. It's like an hour break between our Happy Hour sessions. That's the way I look at it. We've run for 35 or 40 minutes, and now we'll have a two-hour break if we're lucky. We won't waste time. We'll put our heads together and see what we can come up with. Nobody wants to come back the next day. We've got lights, so I'm betting we'll stay here as long as it takes to get it in today."
