Allmendinger "all for it" after NASCAR test of Charlotte road course

AJ Allmendinger tried to deflect questions regarding his road course test at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Jan. 13, by claiming he was on the golf course that day.

Then the driver of the No. 47 JTG Daughterty Racing Chevy came clean.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen — I’m not the decision-maker in it, but I thought it was a lot of fun,” Allmendinger said. “I enjoyed it. I think it can bring something new to the schedule, something new if it was done.

“So, I’m all for it. I’m probably biased towards that. But it’s just like the new format. Change can be good. It can be a little scary and we all have to see how it plays out. But could it be successful? I think it would be a fantastic race. It would be something new that the fans could truly enjoy.”

Allmendinger’s first career Cup win came at Watkins Glen in 2014. He qualified for the playoffs that season finished a career-high 13th in the standings. Allmendinger also enjoys his best average finish of 9.4 at the Glen.

NASCAR fans have expressed their desire for additional road courses — particularly a circuit as one of the 10 races in the playoffs. When motorsport.com first reported about the test last week, sources said if the road course was used for NASCAR competition, it would likely be for the fall race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Although Allmendinger was only involved in testing the potential road course at CMS — which features roughly a 2.3-mile circuit that incorporates both the infield in Turns 1 and 2 and the regular 1.5-mile oval — he has no vote on when or if NASCAR’s top tours could compete on the course.

But if he had a choice?

“I’d just make them all — make the whole series road course races,” Allmendinger replied.
