RYAN NEWMAN (No. 12 ALLTEL Dodge Charger) -- Wins Pole

"My lap was pretty good. The guys did a great job in the pits. I had a hard time getting on pit road, but I was trying to get everything I could out of it. I guess it was good enough. It was a good effort for sure for the ALLTEL Dodge. It's cool to have a team qualifying effort. The guys have done a great job the past two weeks, and we carried it into tonight. We'll see how it works out tomorrow night. I really just enjoy this racetrack. I don't think Humpy did anything wrong to it, and we're really looking forward to tomorrow night's race."

COMMENT ON PENSKE RACING SOUTH BUYING OUT RUSTY WALLACE, DON MILLER AND JOHN ERICKSON

"Obviously it was Roger Penske's decision. He had to have an agreement with Rusty and Don to do what he did. I don't see it changing anything at all the way Penske is run and operated. If anything, I'd say I hope for better results as far as the car drives. I have so much loyalty to Roger Penske and Don Miller and Matt Borland for giving me the opportunity to do what we've done as a team. It's great. It's an honor. I think the stats are since we started in the Cup Series we've won the third most amount of races and had the most poles as anyone out there. Who'd want to walk away from that?

"I knew it was going on, but I had nothing to do with it. It was pretty much a business deal that Roger (Penske) made. Don Miller is going to continue with his role, and as far as I know John Erickson is going to continue in his role. Rusty obviously has different plans for the future, but that shouldn't change the way our car runs. I never said I was going anywhere. I'm happy doing what I'm doing where I'm at. I'm having a lot of fun. The last two races have been great, and we've had a shot at winning the last two races. There's been times this year when that wasn't even a consideration. We look forward to the rest of the year for sure."

COMMENT ON YOUR WIN IN 2002 ALL-STAR RACE

"When I won it in 2002 I said we beat every body on a given night trying their hardest for money. Sometimes that makes for harder competition. It seems like it's the best of the best at the best time."

IS YOUR CAR BETTER? ARE YOU READY TO WIN NOW?

"The balance on the car is better. The car is running good. The last couple of races we felt like we've had a car that's capable of winning. We should have won Darlington, but we'll see if we can carry it out here. We were good in practice here today, and we always enjoy Charlotte. We were ready to win two weeks ago until the yellow came out. We had a good shot at winning Daytona, Vegas and California. We struggled at points in between, but I think we've performed well the past two weeks."

COMMENT ON SMOOTHING THE TRACK

"That's a misconception by a lot of people. They think every racecar driver wants to smooth the racetrack, and I was perfectly fine with the track that's got the bumps in it and has some differences from other racetracks and in different parts of the racetrack itself. If it was twice as rough as it used to be, I'd be cool with that, too. Pocono was one of the roughest tracks we had as far as bumps on the bottom of the racetrack. The tunnel turn at Pocono is also really rough, but it all depends on fast your car is."

COMMENT ON TIRE WEAR

"The tires are brand new (here) because of the repave. Tire wear looks good for a 20 or 25-lap run. They look great. Hopefully you can run 60 laps on a set of tires, but I don't know if that will be the case tomorrow night."

COMMENT ON A 'WORKING MAN'S DRIVER

"I think there's a different kind of working man's driver. I think today it's one that goes to the shop regularly and goes out with the guys and it doesn't matter if he gets his hands dirty or not. It's not a go or show kind of guy who goes to the track and when the race is over goes back to his coach."

DO YOU LIKE THE FORMAT OF THE ALL-STAR CHALLENGE?

"It's all right. It is what it is. If they were to make it anything different then we would have to approach it that way. Everybody approaches it a certain way. We'll approach it our way and see who wins. It's all right. There's nothing special about it. It's not like it's hands down better than anything else we do all year. I try the same no matter what."
