Alabama Governor James Named Grand Marshal at Talladega

TALLADEGA, Ala. (April 3) -- Alabama Governor Fob James will serve as the Grand Marshal for the Winston 500, and will give the "Gentlemen Start Your Engines" command prior to the ninth NASCAR Winston Cup Series event of the season on April 27 at 12 noon Central time. Gov. James, Alabama's 55th governor, is in his second term and is the only governor in the United States to be elected both as a Democrat (1978) and a Republican (1994). An All-American and All-Southeastern Conference football standout at Auburn University, Gov. James served on the 1996 Republican Party Platform Committee. He also chaired the Alabama delegation to the 1996 Republican National Convention in San Diego. He is the only governor in the nation to have a weekly radio call-in show. Following his graduation from Auburn, Gov. James played professional football in Canada with the Montreal Allouettes. Before entering politics, he started Diversified Products, an athletic equipment company based in Opelika, Ala. He sold his company prior to running for governor of Alabama in 1978. Donald F. Lamberti, the chairman and CEO of Iowa-based Casey's General Stores, Inc., is the honorary starter for this year's Winston 500. A native Iowan, Lamberti started Casey's General Stores in 1968 and opened his first store in 1969 in a remodeled three-bay gasoline station. His company has grown to encompass a nine-state market area with sales approaching $1 billion. The company employs more than 7,500 people. A director of the National Association of Convenience Stores, Lamberti is a former director of the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame. In 1988, he was named Grocer of the Year by the Iowa Grocers Association. Brett McBrayer, executive director of the Birmingham Automobile Dealers Association, is Grand Marshal for the Birmingham Auto Dealers Association 500K presented by EasyCare on April 26, round 11 of the 1997 NASCAR Busch Series. A native of Birmingham, McBrayer, 28, oversees an organization of 45 dealers in the area and helps increase professionalism among dealers as well as build strong relationships between the dealers and customers. As Grand Marshal, McBrayer will give the command to start engines for the Birmingham Auto Dealers Association 500K presented by EasyCare at 12 noon Central time on Saturday, April 26. Great reserved seat tickets are available for both the Birmingham Auto Dealers 500K presented by EasyCare and the Winston 500.
