Trois Rivieres, PQ: Scott Steckly put together an incredible weekend qualifying third quickest and finishing seventh in the Erb Group/AW Millwrights Pontiac after experiencing a flat tire around the midway point of the CASCAR 100 km event.
Scott Steckly in the #22 Erb Group/AW Millwrights Pontiac shocked some in the CASCAR community by posting the third quickest time during the final qualifying session on Saturday morning in Trois Rivieres. Steckly an oval racer by trade had overheating problems and missed the entire practice session here on Friday morning. "After the trouble we had on Friday morning we used the first qualifying session on Friday afternoon as our practice. We knew we needed to go out and just put some laps on the car so I could get comfortable here. We came here this morning hoping to knock another two seconds off our time in the second qualifier and we were able to do that and it got us up front. This new motor again was just awesome."
Steckly whose usual style is to hang back and wait until late in the race to make his move proved he can run up front as he settled into fourth place early and ran with the lead pack of cars. A punctured right rear tire on lap twenty forced them to pit under green for a replacement. When he returned to the track he was in thirteenth position and set to make a run back up front. On the final lap while attempting a pass on the fifth place car, the #8 car who was behind Steckly didn't make the turn at turn one and drove straight into the side of the 22 Racing Pontiac. When Steckly got turned around and back on track he would come across the finish line in 7th. A happy Steckly said after the race "We have had three bad weeks in a row so this is very important to our whole team and great for our sponsors. We had a really great car today and I felt we could have had a shot at a podium finish if not for that flat tire. Our car was still in good shape at the end and I thought I was going to be able to get by Williams for 5th but another car got over anxious and pushed me off the track in turn one. This definitely gives us some momentum heading into Cayuga next week."
The 22 Racing/Erb Group/AW Millwrights Pontiac Team of Steckly have closed the gap on the top ten in the Castrol Super Series point standings heading to Cayuga on Saturday August 11th for the ninth event of the season.
