Mark Dilley of Barrie, Ontario was the top dog in tonight's qualifying session for Sunday's MOPAR Parts 300. Dilley drove his NTN Bearings-sponsored Dodge Intrepid around Race City's high-banked half-mile in 17.570 seconds or 102.447 mph. Peter Gibbons of Stouffville, Ontario was second-fastest in the Canadian Tire #1.

"We were good right out of the trailer," said Dilley. "I knew in 2 laps that we'd be good. We wrecked that car at Cayuga. It just shows how good these guys are."

Dilley didn't fare as well in the first 100 lap sprint race, dropping out with mechanical problems with two laps to go and finishing 8th. D. J. Kennington of St. Thomas, Ontario started sixth in his CASTROL/Snap-On Tools Intrepid and moved forward steadily, finally passing Dilley on lap 80.

"We started a little bit tight," Kennington said. "I knew as the race went on it would get looser and once it freed itself up it was pretty good."

"Actually, the car's junk," confessed Micks. "We've got to go back and put I don't know how many hours into it. Something's wrong but we'll find it. I think maybe my scales are screwed up."

Gibbons won the second 100 lap sprint, leading the last 72 laps. Don Thomson of Hamilton, Ontario was the early leader in the Home Hardware car but could only hold off Gibbons for 28 laps.

"I didn't even break a sweat. We're ready to go 300 laps right now," said
Gibbons. "We just have to come back Sunday and repeat what we did tonight."

"Man, my car was loose!", exclaimed Thomson. "I'll be making wholesale changes for Sunday."
