Micks bests Thomson in back-and-forth CASCAR Super Series battle at Mosport

BOWMANVILLE, ON - Saturday night's Mosport Speedway 200 was a head-to-head battle between the two prime combatants for this year's CASCAR Super Series championship. After Don Thomson started on the pole for the 200-lap chase at the half-mile Bowmanville-area oval, he and Kerry Micks swapped the lead a whopping 11 times, including Micks' lap 190 pass on Thomson, en route to the second victory of the season for the UFCW Taurus driver.

Micks' win narrowed the points gap between he and Thomson to just 18 points after nine of the series' 12 events. Thomson started first in the 21-car field after lapping Mosport Speedway in 22.059 seconds during Saturday afternoon's Time Trial qualifying session. Winning the pole was a particularly impressive achievement, given that it was the first time Thomson had ever raced this particular version of the Home Hardware Chevy in Super Series action. He was forced to employ a replacement after his primary oval car was stolen, two weeks ago.

Although Micks and Thomson traded paint on several occasions during the Mosport Speedway 200, the championship rivals raced each other closely and cleanly throughout. Following the event, neither driver could remember ever participating in such a closely contested race.

The Mosport Speedway 200 was completed in 1 hour and 28.30 minutes, and was slowed by just three caution periods for a total of 18 laps. Finishing third at Mosport was DJ Kennington, driver of the Snap On / Castrol Intrepid. Fittingly, the St. Thomas driver is third in the National point standings, 40 points back of Micks and just 58 markers behind Thomson. With just three events remaining on the 2003 schedule, the championship is shaping up as a three-way battle between Thomson, Micks and Kennington.

The CASCAR Super Series resumes next weekend at London's Delaware Speedway.
