Consistent day for Home Hardware Team in Montreal
August 2, 2008. Don Thomson Jr. and the Home Hardware Chevrolet team wanted to improve on their road course performance for round number seven of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series (NCATS) schedule at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal. The Home Hardware team had a very steady day for the entire race.
Thomson would qualify the Home Hardware Chevrolet in sixth spot and began the 100km event on the outside of row number three. With a track like that in Montreal that is so hard on cars it was important to establish a comfortable race pace for the early part of the race. "Our car was pretty good and we knew that we were definitely set for a good day so we didn't want to get too aggressive too early" said the driver.
The top group of cars tried to get away from the rest of the competitors and the Home Hardware Chevrolet was among the front runners. "Things were looking good for us; a couple of caution flags bunched the field up so no one was going to get away. We wanted to wait until the end to try and gain a little more".
As the laps ticked away Thomson looked to try and move forward. "Late in the race when we thought it was time to go the car was a little bit tight, but still overall pretty good" said the driver. "We mixed it up a little and got a spot and finish fifth but that was all we could do. Maybe we should have tried to move a little bit earlier. All in all though a really consistent weekend for the Home Hardware Chevy. Now we're back to oval racing at Mosport next week where we'll try and make it back to back wins".
With his fourth top-five finish Don Thomson Jr. sits second in the overall driver standings.
