Marc Miller and Carhartt Racing Post Impressive 9th in 2004 CASCAR Debut
Miller takes top rookie, top rookie qualifier and ran as high as 5th in first race of year
Bowmanville, ON (June 21, 2004) --- The Carhartt Racing #8 CASCAR Super Series team captured a well deserved ninth-place result in the Clarington 200 at the Mosport International Raceway this past weekend. Miller, the only American driver in the 26-car field, took top Rookie honors while competing within the top-10 all weekend.
The Carhartt Team spent both qualifying sessions working on pit strategy and a set-up for a long run and was still able to qualify among the front of the grid. On Sunday afternoon, the field took the green flag for the 51-lap race and roared through the 2.5-mile road course. Miller passed the #88 car of Dave Jacombs in turn-8 and worked on chasing down the #60 MOPAR Dodge of Ron Beauchamp Jr. before an early caution on Lap-4 bunched the field up again. The team strategy was to short-pit and just take fuel and take advantage of track position. Miller brought the car down pit road and the Carhartt crew did a flawless 7-second fuel stop and pulled out directly behind the NTN Bearing car of Mark Dilley, placing the rookie in the 5th spot.
Miller battled hard for position with the #02 of Kerri Micks, #39 of Dave Whitlock, and #25 car of Jim Lapcevich lap after lap and using fresher tires they eventually worked their way by, including a broadside "rub" from 3-time National Champion, Dave Whitlock. Miller held off a late charge from the #60 MOPAR Cascar and finished the race in 9th position and earned the TOP ROOKIE AWARD for the day.
"Our goal this weekend was to show that even with a part-time SuperSeries effort, we could compete with the best in CASCAR," said Miller. "I think we proved that today. Now that we have a taste for top-10 finishes, our goal is now top-5 runs at Toronto and Vancouver."
"We came in today with a car that could run in the top 10 and we used good strategy to claim ninth," said Tim Glassford, crew chief of the Carhartt team. "The team did a fantastic job and we got it done in the pits and Marc impressed a lot of people in the paddock today. He ran a flawless race."
The Carhartt Racing #8 team will next head to the Toronto Molson Indy event on July 9 and 10. The team is also sponsored by the United Association of Journeyman & Apprentices (UA), Maytag, DeWalt, Miller Electric, Castrol, Tide, Reid Bros. Collision and Praxair.
