Joe Plazek gets first CASCAR race under his belt...ready for more.
London, ON (May 19, 2002) - The 2002 CASCAR Super Series season got under way today under partly cloudy skies and cold temperatures. The weather didn't stop thousands of fans flocking to Deleware Speedway to see the debut of Canadian DIRT racing legend Joe Plazek and his Playstation 2 Racing Team.
Coming into the season they new the learning curve was going to be steep. New cars, new crewmembers and tracks he has never seen before all add to the pressure of fielding a top class racing team in the CASCAR Super Series. As a CASCAR rookie Plazek plans on walking before he runs.
The weekend started out well. Without so much as a test day completed before this first event the practise sessions were much like a test. Shaking down the car and getting comfortable with it were the objectives. In a testament to Plazek Racing's abilities in preparation, the car performed flawlessly.
Plazek time trialed the car with a best lap of 20.452 seconds and an average speed of 88.011. With only 20 cars guaranteed a starting spot through time trials Plazek would have to run the last chance qualifier. He would finish 11th, guaranteeing him a 34th place starting position for the feature race on Sunday.
At the drop of the green flag for the Mopar 250 Plazek settled in for a day of firsts. As the laps wore down he looked more and more comfortable in the car and his confidence rose. The race was a caution filled event (16 for 91 laps) and it was remarkable that right up until lap 239 of 250 the Playstation 2 car didn't have so much as a scratch on it. Unfortunately, two cars ahead of Plazek got together half way up the back straightaway cars were criss-crossing the track and Joe could not avoid slamming into the back of Kelly Williams.
The crew made quick work of the repairs and Joe would soldier on to a 21st place finish at the drop of the chequered flag.
Plazek and the Playstation 2 Racing Team will gain further experience as they make their first appearance at the 1/3 mile, high banked oval at Peterborough Speedway Saturday, May 25.
