J.R. FITZPATRICK ROARS BACK IN EDMONTON

July 26, 2008. John Ryan (J.R.) Fitzpatrick and the #84 Fitzpatrick Motorsports team had just about as bad a start to their weekend as you can imagine. But when round six of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series was complete at the Edmonton Indy J.R. and the #84 car scored a fourth place finish.

As the practice session began in Edmonton for the Fitzpatrick Motorsports team no one could have imagined it would come to an end even before the #84 cars first lap was complete. "A motor failure would have the team scrambling to complete an engine change before qualifying.

The tide began to change during qualifying when without a single lap of practice on the challenging race course at City Centre Airport J.R. Fitzpatrick recorded the sixth quickest qualifying time. "That was really something" said Fitzpatrick afterwards. "What a great job by everybody to get this car not just ready but that good so quickly". It was a sign of things to come.

As the green flag waved for the 100km event Fitzpatrick immediately began to look ahead and was quickly inside the top-five. However trouble was once again ahead in the form of oil on the track. The #84 Chevrolet spun and dropped a couple of positions before the caution flag waved. Fortunately no harm was done to the car.

As soon as racing resumed J.R. was again headed toward the front of the field. "We just got back at it and the car responded" said Fitzpatrick. "We got up into third for a bit, we were pushing for second for a while, but with the Chevrolet we just didn't quite have the horsepower to hold the spots".

Fitzpatrick would finish one spot off the podium in fourth and had plenty of praise for his team afterwards. "It was such a great job by the Fitzpatrick Motorsports team this weekend. We only had a couple of laps on the car before the race and to have this kind of success really shows how good this team is.

J.R. Fitzpatrick now jumps to fifth in the overall championship standings.

J.R and the Fitzpatrick Motorsports team are headed east for the next event at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal this coming Saturday August 2nd. The 2008 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series schedule will take teams to the east coast and western Canada where Fitzpatrick swept away the competition last year. All races will once again be broadcast on TSN. More information on the series can be obtained by visiting www.nascar.ca
