Tuesday July 4, 2000: Barrie’s Al Turner in the Blue Streak Intrepid finished in the sixth place today at CASCAR’s first appearance at Autodrome Chicoutimi in northern Quebec. Turner, who started the Autopro 150 in the sixth starting position, exactly where he finished, fought a loose handling car all day.
Practicing and qualifying went well for Turner as he posted a 16.401 in the first of two timed qualifying laps. This was not quick enough to beat pole sitter Don Thomson who posted a 16.166 but it was sixth quickest of the 25 competitors in attendance. Turner then lined up fourth for the fast qualifiers heat race. Turner in the #76 Blue Streak Intrepid went on to win the heat race gaining more valuable points in the chase for the Eastern Championship.
Turner lined up 6th for the start of the Autopro 150 based on their time trials. After several early caution periods the field settled in and Turner ran as far back as ninth while again applying a patient strategy. About the midpoint of this 150-lap event the #76 Intrepid was continuing to be very loose in the turns. Turner commented after the race “We certainly didn’t have as good a car today as last week – I guess we were off the set up a bit as I expected the car to tighten up as the race went on and that just didn’t happen. We will definitely take this sixth place, what with the way the car handled today.”
The next event on the schedule for Al Turner and the #76 Blue Streak Intrepid team is the Exide 99 on the streets of Toronto at the Molson Indy July 14-16. Watch for this event to be televised live on Sportsnet at 3 p.m. Saturday July 15th.
