DJ KENNINGTON ALREADY BUSY AND GETTING READY FOR THE NASCAR CANADIAN TIRE SERIES 2008 SEASON
March 7, 2008. With a chill in the air and still plenty of snow on the ground, preparations for DJ Kennington and the Castrol Dodge racing team are heating up for the 2008 NASCAR Canadian Tire season. Better than two months remain before the expanded thirteen race schedule's first event at Cayuga Speedway near Hamilton, Ontario but the work being done now will have the team operating at peak performance right away.
The first order of business was securing a new primary sponsorship agreement with Wakefield Canada to carry the Castrol brand for another season. "Our association with Castrol goes back to beginning of my racing career" said Kennington. "It wasn't as much a negotiation as it was a discussion confirming our partnership for the season. Castrol has been so supportive over the years it's a privilege to carry on our association".
Kennington and the Castrol team are also hard at work preparing the #17 Castrol Dodge cars that will be running at the front of the field all season long. "This is when the team puts in some significant time at the shop to work on a few ideas for the motor program to see how they affect the engine performance. This kind of work is impossible to do during the season because of the busy schedule, but it's important for us to get maximum performance during the year".
While work continues at the race shop, Kennington is also sharpening his skills on the track as he pilots the #81 car in the NASCAR Nationwide series, formerly Busch series, for Canadian owner Randy McDonald. "I can't tell you how much I've been able to learn since Randy and I began working together" said the driver. "This is what I've wanted to do since I was a kid and being able to talk in the garage with some of the best racers in the world and run with them out on the track is a great experience. Dwight Kennedy at Northern Provincial Pipeline has been very supportive this program".
The 2008 NASCAR Canadian Tire series schedule will compete in the same twelve events as last year along with a new race added to the schedule at the Autodrome St. Eustache. "We've run there before" said Kennington "and I've won there so I'm pretty happy to have this track on the schedule. Knowing the kind of success we can have at St Eustache should help us get that championship this whole team wants".
Other events on the racing calendar include two events at Barrie Speedway just north of Toronto where Kennington brought the Castrol Dodge home to victory in both races last year and a return to Sun Valley Speedway near Vernon B.C. The second half of the western Canada swing has the teams running on the airport runways in Edmonton as part of the Grand Prix. Two of the other marquee events are the Grand Prix de Trois Rivieres and as part of the NASCAR Nationwide series weekend at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal. "I've got some unfinished business in Montreal" said Kennington. "We just missed a podium finish in the Castrol Dodge and I also want to complete the Nationwide series race, the car was awesome but unfortunately we had a mechanical problem end our day early last year. The Castrol colours will also be on Kennington's Nationwide series car at the Montreal event.
