This past weekend the CASCAR Super Series opened up the 2003 racing season in front of more than ten thousand fans at Delaware Speedway near London, Ontario. And Scott Steckly in the new Schick Xtreme3 Pontiac had a strong team effort to open the season with a seventh place finish.
In any sport when the new season is about to get underway there is a great deal of excitement and nervous energy. When rain forced the cancellation of 100 lap qualifying races this past Friday at Delaware Speedway, it also took away the opportunity to get a feel for the car before the 300 lap main event. The result was Scott qualifying 15th to start the race. Not ideal, and when the car wasn't handling properly during the race, the Schick Xtreme3 team were quick to make changes.
Steckly would stop a total of five times during the race for tires and adjustments to the car. The changes would make for a better handling car, which allowed Scott to pass on the tight half-mile oval and move up through the field to eventually finish seventh. "With the car we had today, we'll take seventh" said Steckly after the race. "We figured if we just stay out we'll lose ground, let's stop and make changes and try hard to improve our position." The strategy worked.
A wonderful race day crowd enjoyed the pre race activities at Speedfest, and dozens were constantly lined up to receive free Schick Xtreme3 products, meet the Razor Magazine Girls, take pictures and get autographs. In fact, over 3,000 free Schick Xtreme3 razors were handed out to happy race fans on Sunday.
The opening event was won by Dave Whitlock. Two-time defending series champion Don Thomson Jr was second, Neil Fair third.
A late adjustment to the CASCAR schedule has the teams racing next at Peterborough Speedway, under the lights on Saturday June 7th. Scott Steckly said following the announcement, "I'm happy for the change, I like Peterborough"
That will be your next opportunity to meet Scott & the Schick Xtreme3 team along with, the Razor Magazine Girls, and enjoy great CASCAR racing.
