Jacombs returns from Quebec with top five.
Montmagny, PQ: Hamilton Ontario's Dave Jacombs gave the Speedy Racing Team their second top five finish of the season today with a fifth in CASCAR's inaugural appearance at Autodrome Montmagny. The Snap-On Tools 200 entertained a large and enthusiastic crowd. Jacombs time trailed 14th quickest and that would be his starting position for what would be an exciting race. CASCAR has put on some spectacular shows of late and event #10 today would be no exception. The fans were again on their feet at the finish, as the 8 remaining lead lap cars waged a battle right to the checkered flag.
Jacombs in the #88 Speedy Auto/Dynomax/Inroble Brakes/FAG Automotive Taurus arrived in Quebec with the remainder of the CASCAR teams on Saturday for an afternoon practice session. So Sunday's one hour pre-race practice was used to fine-tune the race cars for the 200 lap main event later in the afternoon.
Twenty-three CASCAR late models took to the track for the first time at this facility located east of Quebec City. On lap 89 when the second caution of the race flew Jacombs, who was running just out of the top ten ducked into the pits for a right rear tire and came back out to line up mid-pack again. By lap 100 he was up to 8th and moving forward. On the ensuing re-starts the lead lap cars lined up on the outside of the lapped cars but when they took the green for the final time on lap 190, the lapped car of #99 Pete Vanderwyst dropped back and let the 8 lead lap cars do battle. This was the opportunity Jacombs was waiting for. At the drop of the green and with only 10 laps to go Jacombs moved from 8th to take the checkered flag in 5th. Jacombs said after the race, "We had a really good car today but every re-start we were back mid-pack and had to line up on the outside of the lapped cars. It was really difficult to pass and you would get by a couple of them and then have another re-start and have to do it all over again," he added. "I wish the race had been another 10 laps longer as we were moving up and maybe we could have picked off a couple more spots. We won't complain though as fifth is good for our Speedy Team."
Finish: 1. Dave Whitlock 2. D. J. Kennington 3. Don Thomson Jr. 4. Kevin Dowler 5. Dave Jacombs
The next event on the agenda for the #88 Speedy Auto Service/Dynomax Performance Exhaust Team is CASCAR Event #11 at Kawartha Speedway just outside Peterborough on Sunday August 18th.
