Gibbons wins pole for Sunday's CASCAR National at Mosport

CASCAR Castrol Super Series - National Championship // Round #3 // Mosport Int'l Raceway

OSHAWA, ON - First round qualifying for Sunday's 'UAP/NAPA Presents the Mosport 250km' CASCAR Castrol Super Series National event took place at Mosport Int'l Raceway on Friday afternoon. The half-hour, timed session set the front row for Sunday's feature event on the legendary Canadian road circuit. Continuing his recent hot streak, defending race winner and National champion Peter Gibbons set the fastest time of the session to capture the pole position for Sunday's 250 km main event. The Stouffville, ON racer guided his Canadian Tire Chevy around the challenging circuit in one minute and 29.846 seconds. That was three-quarters of a second better than the best time of Al Turner, who was second fastest at 1 minute, 30.622 seconds. Turner's result was especially gratifying considering it was the first time in over a month that he'd been behind the wheel of his Blue Streak Intrepid. The Barrie, ON racer missed a pair of CASCAR events while attending to his son, James, who underwent emergency back surgery near the end of July. Based on their performances, Gibbons and Turner have secured the first and second (respectively) starting positions for the 'UAP/NAPA Presents the Mosport 250km'. In all, 31 cars posted qualifying runs this afternoon at Mosport. Ford drivers Kevin Dowler and Dave Whitlock were third and fourth, while Don Thomson Jr., who is second in the National points to Gibbons, was fifth fastest. The rest of the starting field for Sunday's race will be determined on Saturday via a pair of Sprint Races.

Weekend Schedule: On Saturday, the CASCAR Late Models will take to the track at 1:00 p.m. for their second and final qualifying session. A pair of 35-minute timed Sprint Races - which will award the same amount of National championship points as Sunday's feature - will commence at 3:00 and will set the remainder of the field for Sunday's CASCAR main, which will start at 2:00 p.m. There are many other classes on the weekend schedule at Mosport, including F1200s, ChampCar Lights, Canada GT Challenge Cup and the Cdn. Formula Ford 1600s.
