Micks And Gibbons Win Qualifying Sprints At Race City
CALGARY, AB - The Castrol Super Series took to the track at Calgary's Race City Speedway on Friday evening. Setting the pace during qualifying was rookie driver Robbie Thomson, of Southampton, ON. The Logel / SMP Intrepid driver set a new Super Series track record at the facility when he lapped the high-banked, half-mile oval in just 17.376 seconds. Timing in second fastest was defending Mopar Parts 300 winner Peter Gibbons. His Canadian Tire Chevy circled the track in 17.451 seconds. Based on their efforts, Thomson and Gibbons secured the top two spots, respectively, for Sunday's Mopar Parts 300.
Following time trials, a pair of 100 lap sprint races was held. They determined starting spots 3 through 18 for Sunday's 300 lap main event.
In the first, former Castrol Super Series champion Kerry Micks took advantage of a deflating tire on the car of race leader DJ Kennington, with 10 laps to go, to take the victory in his TIM-BR Mart Ford Taurus. Kennington's Castrol Intrepid was able to hold on for second, ahead of Ron Larson, the top finishing western racer in the field.
Edmonton's Kevin Dowler paced the field for the first 43 laps before passing the torch to Kennington, who led until lap 90, at which time Mt. Albert, ON's Micks took control. During the race, the engine of Sunday's pole-sitter Robbie Thompson blew up, leaving him 15th and last in the final results.
In the second 100-lap sprint race, Peter Gibbons led all but three laps on his way to the checkered flag. Gibbons started on the pole and aside from laps 9-11, which were led by Blue Streak Intrepid driver Al Turner, Gibbons owned the race and came home almost two seconds ahead of his nemesis and Castrol Super Series points leader Don Thomson. Three-time CASCAR champion Dave Whitlock was third.
