Veteran crew chief departs with mixed emotions
WINDSOR, ON - In a joint announcement today, Beauchamp Motorsports team owner Ron Beauchamp Sr. and team crew chief Tim Ellas have confirmed that Ellas will be leaving the MOPAR Parts / Exide Batteries Dodge team, effective immediately.
After four events, the team is tied for sixth in the CASCAR Super Series point standings. Commenting on the move, Beauchamp Sr. said, "We have just not been able to make things happen as planned. Our strategy has not produced the results we were looking for and much more work needs to be done."
Ellas joined the team at the start of the 2003 season and worked with the Windsor-based team even though he continued to live in Huntsville, ON, which is two hours north of Toronto.
"I have mixed emotions leaving the team at this point," said Ellas. "When we started this relationship at the beginning of last season, my hope was to assist in taking this team to a championship. We have not been able to accomplish this goal. Much more ^A'hands-on' work needs to be done. The time required to 'turn things around' and the distance between Huntsville, my residence, and the race shop in Windsor are factors beyond my capabilities."
According to Ron Beauchamp Sr., the team will add new crew members and will share the crew chief's duties as "a team effort" at this point.
"Tim [Ellas] is an experienced and very intelligent crew chief," stated Rick Williams, a spokesperson for MOPAR. "He has crewed a National Champion in CASCAR with Dan Shirtliff and holds the qualifying track record at Delaware Speedway with Dave Jacombs-- pretty good credentials! It's too bad that their goal of fielding a championship contender didn't materialize. Tim will make a great crew chief for another team and we look forward to seeing him at the track. MOPAR supports their decision."
The next outing for the #60 MOPAR Parts Dodge team will come July 3-4 at Cayuga 2000 Speedway for the third-annual Canada Day Shootout. Beauchamp finished eighth in the season's first race at Cayuga, in early June.
