CRIVILLÉ CRASHES OUT CHARGING HARD, GIBERNAU 8TH AND OKADA 9TH

Sete Gibernau gave the Repsol YPF Honda team its best result today by taking 8th place, just ahead of his team-mate Tadayuki Okada. Alex Crivillé was the man on the move during the first few laps of the race. He was charging hard but crashed out just after he moved past Loris Capirossi and into fourth place. The world champion bravely remounted to pursue his racing efforts, but later had no choice but to pull into the Repsol YPF Honda pit and retire.

SETE GIBERNAU 8th 48'48.893 World Championship Position: 15th 59 Pts
"The race didn't go as I expected. I didn't have a good set-up for that race and that's my fault. But it meant I was having problems racing out there. I still tried to ride with the front group and because of that, I almost crashed three times. Then I saw Alex Crivillé go down and I remembered my own crash in Estoril. I opted to play it safe rather than take too many risks. I tried to do my best with what I had. It's a pity that I wasn't able to get a better results, especially with all the fans here for this race".

TADAYUKI OKADA 9th 48'49.145 World Championship Position: 12th 87 Pts
"That was another tough race for me. My start was okay but then, going into the first corner, all hell broke loose! Everyone was just bunching into each other there and some rider touched me and pushed me off-line. I don't know who it was but I intend to find out! That move lost me a lot of time and places. The problem for me is that right now, my bike isn't giving me the tyre performance and the feeling I need and I want. After a few laps I get to understand the way it's sliding and handling and I can't turn in constant lap times, but by then it's too late."

ALEX CRIVILLÉ RETIRED World Championship Position: 9th 107 Pts
"I had a good warm-up and I was really confident for the race. I was fastest this morning and my time was also faster than my best time in qualifying yesterday. My start was okay and straight away, I started to overtake people. I was feeling really aggressive. I really wanted to move up as fast as I could and get back up with the front guys. I saw that Garry was starting to get away from the others so I pushed even harder to get past Capirossi. The, going into the last corner, I lost the front. It's a shame because I felt so confident and comfortable on the bike today".
