SIMONCELLI READY FOR LAGUNA SECA EXPERIENCE AS MELANDRI CONTINUES RECOVERY
Marco Simoncelli's arrival amongst the MotoGP elite at Sachsenring on Sunday, when he was part of a race-long battle with Andrea Dovizioso and Nicky Hayden, confirmed his recent progress and prepared him perfectly for the challenge of an entirely new circuit as the series moves from Germany to the United States this week. The Team San Carlo Honda Gresini rider is gradually establishing himself as one of the stars of the MotoGP World Championship as he makes the step up from rookie to frontrunner.
Laguna Seca also provides Marco Melandri with another opportunity to continue with his recovery from the injuries sustained at Assen last month. The Italian was on the podium here in 2005 and 2006 and hopes it can be the place where he recovers the strength and confidence to complete a weekend focused purely on the set-up of his Honda RC212V and reap the fruit of weeks of hard work. Team San Carlo Honda Gresini are looking forward to returning to the legendary circuit on the outskirts of Monterey, where they hope to be back amongst the headlines for all the right reasons.
Marco Simoncelli "I had a lot of fun at Sachsenring, the whole race was fantastic and now we go to a circuit that I only know from playing Gran Turismo on the games console. I've never been there before so I am curious so see how it is, also we will get an electronic upgrade in America so there will be a few new things to get used to -- that will make it a tough weekend for me and for the guys in the team. There will be a lot of things for us to get used to in the first session, which won't be easy, but I don't take long to learn new tracks so I'll just have to take it steady and learn how the electronics work because even if they don't make an immediate difference I'm sure they will do in the future. I hope I can continue in this way because at the moment I am feeling very happy with things. "
Marco Melandri "Laguna Seca is one of the nicest tracks in the world as far as I am concerned but it won't be easy. I was disappointed after Germany because I thought I was going to be in better physical shape but it proved to be the opposite and I completely ran out of strength. It wasn't easy so my confidence is not the best going to America. There are a few less left-hand corners at Laguna so I hope I can recover my feeling with the bike. I would really like to make up for the result at Sachsenring at a circuit I like and where I have always raced well so I hope I can be fighting as much as possible. The atmosphere in California is special, the track is fast and flowing and as I said before I love it there but I don't want to make any predictions until I see what shape I am in."
Fausto Gresini "With his fantastic performance at Sachsenring Simoncelli has confirmed the recent progress he has made and now he tackles Laguna Seca, a completely new circuit for him but one I think he will enjoy and one that should suit his riding style even if it should be more difficult for him than other places he knows. Melandri has a lot of experience here and has been on the podium twice. Laguna Seca could be the track where he finally comes through the physical problems that have been dogging him since Holland up to Germany. Compared to Sachsenring, which is full of left-handers, the American track has a few more to the right and that should make it less problematic for him. We also have some electronic updates for this race so it is a fresh opportunity in many ways as we look to take another step forward "
