Taking risks paid off against “weak” factory riders – Redding

Ducati MotoGP privateer Scott Redding said his ride to a podium finish in the wet Dutch TT at Assen proved that satellite teams can beat the factory riders in tough conditions.

Pramac rider Redding and Marc VDS Honda’s Jack Miller – who won the race – took full advantage of changeable weather conditions, during which many of the category’s leading lights fell.

“In these conditions, we have to take the risks, you have to try and take the factory guys when they are weak,” said Redding, who briefly led at the start. “And this is what we did.

“I’m feeling more confident, slowly we are getting there. It’s not easy without a factory bike, but we don’t give up and when you get results like this, it pays off.”

"I saw them all crashing"

Redding was in the mix for victory when the race was stopped due to a torrential downpour, and although he was never in with a shout of the race win in the restarted 12-lapper, says he was still taking huge risks.

“The conditions were still difficult in the second race,” said Redding. “I was pushing more than I wanted and the guys in front were still pulling away. So I was taking some risks.

“I lost the front quite a few times. Then I saw them all crashing, and I decided ‘hold your pace, see what happens’.

“When it came to me, I started to improve. I was riding 80-90 percent, and I was catching Pol and passed him.

“I nearly crashed two times on the last lap, so when I made the finish it felt unreal.

We’ve had a lot of bad luck this year, so to have a front row yesterday and a podium today, that’s all I could ask for.”
