Day one of the official IRTA tests at the Circuit de Catalunya for the FIM Road Racing World Championship Grand Prix (MotoGP) ended up being dominated by Camel Yamaha Team with both riders, Valentino Rossi and Colin Edwards, taking a strong 1-2 in the timesheet.
The activity started at 10:00 local time and had Rizla Suzuki rider John Hopkins and American Edwards in the lead until current World Champion Rossi decided, around 12:40, to accelerate his Yamaha M1 and six laps later put his name in the top of the field.
Rossi set 1m43s608 after 23 laps on the Spanish circuit, taking almost half a second over his team mate Edwards whose best time was 1m44s063 after 56 laps.
However, it wasn`t all good for the Italian who had an early finish of his work on track after an accident at 3:30 that brough out the red flag.
Local rider Carlos Checa was the surprise of the day setting best third time with the Yamaha of Tech 3 Team. The Spaniard proved he is in good form for the season after a hard time over the off-season when his former team Sito Pons decided to retire from the Continental Circus.
Hopkins was able to confirm his good pace shown in pre-season tests of Malaysia and put the Suzuki in fourth position with a laptime of 1m44s197. Nicky Hayden was the best between the Honda guys in fifth place with the Repsol Honda Team and 1m44s209 in 87 laps.
Top ten was completed by Shinya Nakano in the Kawasaki, Sete Gibernau as the top Ducati, both Fortuna Honda riders, Marco Melandri and Toni Elias, and Makoto Tamada in the Konica Minolta Honda.
Tests will continue tomorrow from 10.00 to 18.00 local time with all the field of MotoGP trying to arrive in top shape to season opening in Jerez, on March 26th.
