The Honda rider posted a best lap of 1:33.328 to just outpace his Yamaha rival Jorge Lorenzo, second quickest less than a tenth behind.

Ducati's test rider Michele Pirro was a surprise third fastest in his second outing for the Italian squad this year.

Marquez's teammate Dani Pedrosa finished fourth, but over six tenths off the pace, with Andrea Dovizioso fifth on the second Ducati.

Championship leader Valentino Rossi had a subdued session and finished down in sixth position nearly eight tenths of a second off Marquez's pace.

The session started later than originally scheduled following a red-flag period during first practice for Moto3 after Spaniard Jorge Navarro had to be taken to the medical center after a big crash.

Marquez jumped to the top of the times right away, but as the times tumbled, it was teammate Pedrosa who took first place with a 1:34.180 seven minutes after the start.

The resurfacing of the circuit made the laptimes much faster, and Marquez beat the track record 10 minutes into the session with a lap of 1:33.728, a benchmark he improved on the following lap by some two tenths of a second.

The world champion went even faster some 20 minutes later, posting a 1:33.328 that put him nearly half a second clear of his closest rival, Lorenzo.

Lorenzo closed the gap on Marquez with 18 minutes to go, lapping just a tenth slower than his rival on the Yamaha.

Claudio Corti was the protagonist of one of the new incidents of the session when he crashed heavily at Turn 9 with less than 10 minutes left on the clock.

The Italian walked away from the crash, but his Yamaha flew into the barriers and was heavily damaged.
