Jorge Lorenzo beat Marc Marquez to the top time in free practice two at Misano, and set tongues wagging by doing so after fitting aerodynamic winglets to the fairing of his works Yamaha.
With Marquez mired in traffic in the early moments, Lorenzo set the pace from the get-go, with Ducati’s Andrea Iannone and Dani Pedrosa then grabbing brief moments of glory in P1.
Marquez slammed in a 1m33.138s, which stood as the quickest time for much of the session, well clear of Lorenzo on 1m33.938s at the time. Pedrosa rose to second on 1m33.382s, as Lorenzo chipped down to 1m33.516s in third.
Yamaha’s Valentino Rossi was down in sixth until the final lap of his first run, jumping ahead of Pol Espargaro and Andrea Dovizioso from P6 to P4 with a lap of 1m33.852s.
Lorenzo immediately leapfrogged Pedrosa to go P2 on his second run on 1m33.226s. Marquez almost matched his P1 time with 1m33.175s, then lowered his fastest time to 1m32.924s.
Yamaha added small aerodynamic winglets to Lorenzo’s bike in time for his final run with 10 minutes to go. He immediately improved to the top of the charts on 1m32.871s.
Marquez had no answer for that, with his Honda teammate Pedrosa third on 1m33.258s, ahead of Dovizioso on 1m33.291s who was using the soft rear tyre on his Ducati.
Ducati used far larger double-element wings than usual on its regular duo’s fairings, while test rider Michele Pirro, stuck with the older-spec wings and was ninth fastest.
Rossi improved his time to 1m33.469s but dropped back to fifth.
Pol Espargaro and Danilo Petrucci were sixth and seventh respectively.
Cal Crutchlow crashed at Turn 10, Iannone doing likewise later in the session.
The already-injured Karel Abraham suffered a big high-side at Turn 14.
