Lorenzo assumes momentum in Malaysia

Jorge Lorenzo responded to Valentino Rossi's challenge at Sepang by bettering his Fiat Yamaha team-mate and rival's best time from Friday with the fastest lap in FP2. Lorenzo's lap of 2'01.949 left him top of the second session by a margin of just 0.022s ahead of Casey Stoner.

The pair were the only two to get under 2'02" in the session, with the Ducati Team rider just over two-tenths of a second faster than Rossi who was third in the session with a time of 2'02.192.

Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda) was fourth with rookie Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini) an impressive fifth at 0.594s off Lorenzo's pace. He was followed by Alvaro Bautista as the Rizla Suzuki rider continued his strong weekend with the sixth best time in the session, also marking the second best top speed with the new engine installed yesterday.

Randy de Puniet (LCR Honda), Colin Edwards (Monster Yamaha Tech 3), Hector Barbera (Paginas Amarillas Aspar) and Ben Spies completed the top ten in the session.

A high side crash at turn 12 inside the opening moments of the session for Loris Capirossi meant the Rizla Suzuki rider failed to set a times. The Italian escaped with a contusion to his right foot and has been declared fit for qualifying later in the day.
