Pramac Ducati rider Danilo Petrucci will undergo surgery on Monday evening in Melbourne, following his crash on the final day of MotoGP testing at Phillip Island.
The Italian rider, who topped the timesheets on Wednesday, crashed heavily at Turn 8 during Friday’s running, fracturing the second, third and fourth metacarpals of his right hand.
Petrucci was taken to Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital on Saturday morning, but the swelling on his hand was too severe to operate on – meaning he will have now have to wait until Monday for surgery.
“Danilo has had a very bad night because he hasn’t eaten anything or taken any painkillers in case his operation happened in the morning,” a Pramac source told Motorsport.com.
“What happened is that we went to the consultation at 9am and we were told the hand was too swollen to operate on.”
Petrucci will subsequently travel home to Italy next weekend, and the Pramac team has already confirmed that he will miss the third and final pre-season test at Qatar, which begins on 2 March.
No decision has been made on who will take his place, or on what could happen if Petrucci is also forced to miss the opening race of the season at Qatar on 20 March.
