A tense day at the Catalunya GP for Andrea Dovizioso and JiR Team Scot
The seventh round of the MotoGP season was welcomed to the Catalunya circuit on Thursday with heavy rain, which only ended last night. Practice today started with a very cold racetrack and lap-times weren't at all representative of what can be expected this weekend. This afternoon the track conditions improved and Loris Capirossi was able to set a new lap record, beating Nicky Hayden's previous record set during 2006. Capirossi was also second at the end of the session and only Dani Pedrosa did a better lap, but unfortunately the Spaniard crashed after setting a 1'43"017 lap-time.
Andrea Dovizioso did some very important work today to get the best balance of his bike. The target was to have a good handling machine, with good grip on the front tyre to allow him to ride very cleanly, as is his style. JiR Team Scot is very confident that tomorrow together with their Technical Partners they can move forward and make improvements to the bike.
Cirano Mularoni - Team Manager JiR Team Scot
"The team has done a good job today to follow Andrea's ideas which is that he's looking for more stability from the bike. This afternoon we did better than in the morning session, but we still need to concentrate tomorrow to do even better. Our Michelin tyres allow us to improve, even if the grip characteristics of the track aren't at their best. The weather forecast is apparently stable now for the whole weekend."
Andrea Dovizioso - Rider JiR Team Scot MotoGP
"The work we did today was focussed on solving the instability of the front-end of the bike, which I have experienced in different sections of the track. Mainly I feel this when entering corners and also in the middle of the corner. It's very strong and this is why I cannot push very hard with the front and for this reason I am probably not using the bike in the proper way. I've tried to change some settings with the front forks but still the goal has not been reached. This factor slows down the whole job of choosing tyres for the race and this is why tomorrow we need to do a lot! We have a busy schedule! The team is doing a great job and I'm sure we can do better tomorrow also because apparently the weather seems as if it will be stable."
Gianni Berti - Technical Co-ordinator JiR Team Scot
"Since this morning Andrea realised the front-end of the RC212V is the area we have to concentrate on to find a better balance for the bike. We worked on the setting of the front forks and weight distribution without making changes to the geometry of the bike. We have to reach the right compromise but the grip of the track wasn't the best we can expect here, so our job tomorrow is handling the grip conditions and then sorting out the balance of the bike."
