BRITISH GP Qualifying practice nr 1 Donington Park, 7th of July, 2000

Alex Criville enjoyed a good race at the last Grand Prix, in Holland, and he is hoping to carry that momentum through to the British Grand Prix. The world champion was sixth fastest in today¹s first qualifying practice. He was the best of the Repsol YPF Honda squad, heading his team-mate Tadayuki Okada who took ninth place in the session. Sete Gibernau was back in fourteenth place, but hoping for a better result tomorrow.

ALEX CRIVILLE 6th - 1¹33.502

"It¹s not bad. We have to work on our settings a little more because I need to find more confidence on the bike. My level of concentration is high and I feel good. We need to maintain a winner¹s attitude. We have to improve the feeling I¹m getting from the bike. We need to get the handling right for the race. On paper, we¹re still in with a chance of getting the championship so I¹m not giving up yet. We can close the gap but we have to keep the pressure on the others. I tried a new front suspension today but I think we¹ll go back to our normal settings tomorrow".

TADAYUKI OKADA 9th - 1¹33.525

"I¹m very happy with the way things are going so far. We¹re managing to find some useful traction here and that is helping me a lot. We¹ve also done well with the settings. Why all this progress? Well, as usual, I can¹t give a precise answer to that. It has to remain a secret! I was sliding somewhat towards the end of the session, when I was in a group with Checa and Laconi, but it was nothing serious. We¹ve still got some work to do on the suspension and carburation settings, that¹s all. But I¹m confident for this race. The feeling I have now is very similar to the one I had on the bike last year and that¹s good. My problem today was also making the transition from a four-stroke endurance bike back to my Grand Prix bike. I went testing on the 8 Hour bike at Suzuka before this race and making the switch from a 500 to a four-stroke is a lot easier than doing it the other way around. But it¹s the same for guys like Barros and Rossi, who also attended those tests, and they went faster than me in that session so I mustn¹t complain".

SETE GIBERNAU 14th - 1¹34.368

"We¹ve been having problems with the front suspension all day long. The team¹s been working very hard but we¹re just not getting the results. My problem is that I can¹t go into the corners fast enough because every time I try to, the front forks start to chatter and I have to ease off on the throttle. I know in which sections on the track I¹m losing time but until we can fix the problem there¹s really not much I can do to improve. Despite all these problems, I feel much better. Almost as good as I did at the start of the season. But this problem is turning out to be really hard to solve. Last year, I could lap in the 33s no problem but right now it¹s hard to get down into the low 34s". <pre> Circuit Record Lap : 1998 : Simon Crafar 1¹32.661 Fastest Lap: Kenny Roberts 1¹32.477
