Qualifying practice nr 1 - Phillip Island, 27th of October, 2000
Okada aiming for second win
Tadayuki Okada is working hard to make it two in a row at Phillip Island. Repsol YPF Honda's Japanese star won last year's Australian Grand Prix but found the going pretty difficult today due to the strong wind blowing on the Island. He took 'th fastest time while Alex Criville was 11th and Sete Gibernau 13th.
TADY OKADA - 9th - 1'36.339 "We're working with two different chassis settings at the moment and trying to decide which one suits the conditions best. We've got one older chassis and with that, the feeling is good. I like the track as well. These sweeping turns seem to suit my style. But today the conditions were very dangerous. Going into turn one, the wind is particularly treacherous. You have to try to keep a centaur line but the bike just gets pushed out towards the edge of the track and then the wind catches you under braking. Tomorrow, we'll just work on some adjustments. I'm having a little chatter which might prove a problem at the end of the race so we need to double check everything."
ALEX CRIVILLE - 11th - 1'36.444 "I took quite a blow to my back in that crash and I'll be going to get it checked over at Doctor Costa's clinic later on. I just got caught out by the wind, that's why I crashed. At the end of the main straight, going into the first corner, the wind caught the front of the bike and started pushing me towards the grass. I tried to control it but I ended up losing the front. It's a shame because I started the session well and I was expected good times. I was right up there in the early stages. I felt really good".
SETE GIBERNAU - 13th - 1'37.054 "I thought we could do well today considering the kind of lap times we were turning in at the start of the session but then we kind of outdid ourselves. We started working on our suspension settings and trying different ones. Then we moved on to testing some tyres and in the end, I guess we just tried to do too much stuff in too little time".
