Aledo, IL (June 11, 2001) - On the same day as his high school graduation Robbie Ray scored his first victory of the 2001 WTQMA season at the Aledo Raceway in Aledo, IL. Ray, who at 10am Saturday morning June 9 attended his high school graduation from Davenport West High School, was able to survive numerous cautions and a dry race track to bring home the win.
The night started off with Danny Bradley, of Milan, IL, winning his third heat race of the season over a hard charging Shawn Scripter, of Peotone, IL. Bradley took the lead early and led comfortably. Behind him a battle raged on between several drivers including Tracy Hull, Shawn Scripter and Rod Thompson. The three drivers changed positions lap after lap before Hull dropped out due to mechanical failure and Scripter found a comfortable line and pulled away from Thompson.
The second heat race of the night didn't lack in competition as Mike Raymond, Ray and Doug Kraft all battled early. Raymond jumped out to an early lead followed by Kraft and Ray. Ray and Kraft battled side by side for three laps before Ray passed Kraft down the backstretch. Raymond took the win by two car lengths over Ray.
The feature turned out to be a caution filled event with several drivers having difficulty adapting to the changing conditions of the night. Starting on the pole was Brad Funk who was making only his second start of the season. Funk took the lead on the first lap followed by Kevin Lane in second and Raymond in third. Ray moved up from his fifth place starting position and took the lead on lap three. After several caution periods and a battle on the high side from Raymond, Ray was able to hold on for the win.
