SUN PRAIRIE, WI, November 13--- After 195 events over eleven months, Saturday's Old Pueblo Classic at the Tucson Raceway Park, in Tucson, AZ, could turn out to be the key race in the chase for the 2001 National Midget Driver of the Year Honors. A strange twist of fate has sidelined the top two drivers in points during the past weeks. Current leader Tracy Hines, suffered a broken leg, and and ankle on November 3, in a SCRA Sprint Car Event at Perris, CA, while Jay Drake second in points continues to recover from his accident, in late October at Terre Haute, IN. This situation has opened the door for third place A.J. Fike , to possibly claim the top position, with a strong showing at the final three events of the season. Fike currently trails Hines by 122 points, with a possible 270 points at stake. Fike is also in contention for the USAC National Midget Series Championship. All three remaining events will award points to USAC's National and Western Midget Series. The USAC Western Sprint Car Series also appears with the midgets, at each event. The Tucson event will be an early afternoon show. The 61st annual Turkey Nite Grand Prix, at Irwindale(CA) Raceway will be run on Thursday Night November 22. The season concludes at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, on November 24. A total of 547 Drivers have scored points this season, four short of the record set in 1999. Davey Ray, Aaron Fike, Dave Darland, Matt Westfall, Dan Boorse, Scott Hatton, and Mike Hess round out the top ten. Stealth, and Gaerte have already clinched the Manufacturers championship in the chassis, and engine builders categories. The top ten drivers, and the manufacturers will receive their awards on Saturday Night January 12, prior to the start of the O'Reilly Chili Bowl Nationals, at the Tulsa Expo Raceway.
